How to Make Grilled Teriyaki Steak Lettuce Wraps:

  1. In a shallow dish, stir together 1/2 cup of teriyaki marinade with the black pepper and pressed garlic. Place the steak into the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for one hour to overnight.
  2. When ready to grill, heat the grill to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Shake the excess marinade from the steak, then place the steak directly over the heat. Grill for 1 – 2 minutes, turn, and grill another 1-2 minutes.
  3. Transfer the grilled steak to a platter, cover loosely with foil and let rest while preparing the chopped vegetable toppings.
  4. For the mustard sauce, stir together the remaining marinade, mustard, water, honey, and garlic powder until smooth.
  5. To serve, slice the steak very thinly against the grain. Assemble each lettuce wrap with a portion of the grilled steak slices, then top with carrots, green onions, bell pepper. Drizzle with the prepared mustard sauce and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.

Due to variations in thickness of meat, grill temperature, and preferred doneness, cooking times will vary.

TIP: This recipe is best when the sirloin steak is prepared medium rare.

Tips + Ideas for the Best Lettuce Wraps:

  • Use a lettuce variety that is softer. This makes it easier to “wrap” the contents, which in turn makes them easier to eat. We like Bibb lettuce or butter lettuce leaves.
  • Select the freshest produce possible for the best flavor, color, and crunch.
  • You can use a less expensive cut of beef for this recipe if you’d like. The meat will turn out tender because of the marinating, the fast grilling technique, and letting it rest before slicing.
  • More great topping ideas: salad sprouts, sliced radishes, purple cabbage, and pickled ginger.
  • Not a fan of red meat? This recipe can be made with chicken or pork instead, just cut the marinating time back to 30 minutes.
  • Look for low-sodium marinade options if you are watching your salt intake.
